AbstractDigital transformation (DT) is an emergent concept with definitions and measurements as a work in progress. During nearly two decades of growing interest in the concept, studies in both industry and academia created different scales and indices to measure DT, using varying conceptualizations and coming up with different underlying dimensions and indicators. The aim of this paper is to take stock of this growing body of work through a systematic review in order to first determine dimensions and indicators of an encompassing DT index, and then identify the contemporary change in underlying dimensions of DT. After reviewing 219 research articles on DT measurement in the first phase, we have identified 80 indicators falling under 14 different dimensions. In the second phase, we have compared our results with scales commonly used in the field and identified several emergent dimensions, such as cyber security, investment and finance operations, and partnerships. Emergence of these contemporary dimensions indicate an ‘extrovert’ shift in DT concept which is extending beyond organisational boundaries, with important implications regarding how businesses strategize and take action in today’s DT driven business environment.

International Journal of Agile Systems and Management. URL: https://www.inderscience.com/info/ingeneral/forthcoming.php?jcode=ijasm, doi:10.1504/IJASM.2024.10067383
AbstractThe aim of this research is to explore how organisational factors, ranging from level of specialisation to co-location, interfere with successful implementation of agile innovation practices, which originated in small scale software contexts, and now being applied in projects at large scale and nonsoftware business organisations. We have carried out a multiple case study using several projects within one manufacturing and one digital services firm. Employing a qualitative approach, we interviewed project managers and team members to understand how organisational factors interfere with agile practices. Our findings offer insights into effects of organisational factors on agile practices at the project level and how these differ from their known effects at the macro level. Our results also indicate that factors, such as colocation or availability of technical resources, may interact in non-trivial ways so as to allow new inroads into agile innovation practice in large scale organisations.

AbstractSpatial or geographical distance is influential in many socio-economic networks, but its combination with graph theoretical analysis is challenging. In this study, we define a node and network level spatial dispersion index which combines tie strength and spatial distance in a weighted graph to measure average spatial dispersion of socio-economic activities. The index is computed using an average of tie distances weighted with tie strengths. We define weighted vs unweighted, directed vs undirected, and generalized variants of the index. We demonstrate the use of our index to analyse the network of migration flows between provinces of Turkey by (1) comparing the geographic outreach of migration from provinces in different regions, (2) comparing spatial dispersion of migration to different country level spatial networks of flow such as trade, travel, or health services, and (3) testing effects of population and economic development on spatial dispersion of migration. Our results use weighted vs unweighted, and directed vs undirected variants of the index. Since the index is not problem specific, its use not only prove useful in quantifying features of the network in focus but also allows comparison across different networks. Results of this application demonstrate the suitability of the new index in quantifying and comparing the socio-economic activity in geographically dispersed networks and interpreting the differences.

  • [article] Kars-Unluoglu, S., Guneri Cangarli, B., Yurt, O., & Gencer, M. (2023). Migrants as “dissonant harmony-seekers” and migrant life in “foam”. Journal of Global Mobility: The Home of Expatriate Management Research, 11(1), 125–144. URL: https://doi.org/10.1108/JGM-06-2022-0025
AbstractPurpose: Migration of the Turkish new middle-class – high-skilled, well-educated, young professionals – has been growing in recent years. This paper explores their migration experience and discusses the role of physical and virtual bubbles in the formation of transnational communities and processes of adjustment to a new place. Design/methodology/approach: This paper is based on a qualitative inquiry collecting data via semi-structured interviews with 18 London-based Turkish migrants and a digital ethnographic study of three Facebook groups that bring together the Turkish migrant community in Richmond, London. Findings: Findings indicate that the migration of the new middle class differs conceptually from existing typologies. The paper proposes the concept of “dissonant harmony-seekers” and elaborates on their interactions to demonstrate that, in the Internet age, the traditional image of migrants living in isolated localised bubbles is no longer accurate. Findings also indicate a pragmatic and functional engagement with the bubbles, with migrants sporadically interacting with the bubbles to meet their individual needs in information, education and employment. Originality/value: This paper contributes to the literature with the concept of dissonant harmony-seekers, which will gain more visibility in a world where the trend of democratic decline and rising authoritarianism will motivate a migratory move for people who confront a moral dissociation from the civil order in their homeland. The engagement of dissonant harmony-seekers with migrant communities challenges the conventional thinking that social identity is central to creating and maintaining bubbles. The other contribution of the paper to the literature is the metaphor of “foam” to capture the ephemeral and fugacious nature of the dynamics of migrant communities and practices.

AbstractThe success of agile product development in the software industry has attracted the attention of the industrial new product development (NPD) community, and these approaches are suggested as an alternative NPD method in large-scale organizations. Agile approach to NPD has the potential to overcome the uncertainty that dominates today's business conditions. However, there is little research regarding the performance of this approach and its practices, most of which were developed in the software industry, in other contexts. In this paper we report findings of a qualitative case study on agile NPD efforts in a large-scale manufacturing firm. In contrast to software development, NPD projects in this context span several organizational units and have high organizational complexity. Through a case study methodology, we explore how agile practices address organizational uncertainty. The study, based on semi-structured interviews, covers two NPD projects with a total of? 12 sub-teams. Our results indicate that in a large organization, internal sources of NPD uncertainty dominate external sources. The three factors in organizational uncertainties are interdependency, team volatility, and global dispersion of teams. Furthermore, we develop a model to explain how various agile practices can provide the NPD teams with capabilities to mitigate these organizational uncertainties.

AbstractIn large-scale Open Source Software (OSS) innovation ecosystems that incorporate firms, a variety of measures are taken to tame the potentially chaotic activities and align the contributions of various participants with the strategic priorities of major stakeholders. Such taming rests on the dual desires of this emergent community of firms to unleash the innovation potential of OSS and to drive it to a certain direction, and it emerges in the form of various organizational activities. By drawing on a sample of large-scale OSS ecosystems, we discuss that methods employed for taming are isomorphic, and overview the emerging strategic pattern for establishing systems of innovation. This pattern involves a related set of practices to balance virtues of OSS community while introducing corporate discipline. In contrast to approaches such as open innovation, which favor isolated reasoning, we present a systemic and historical perspective to explain the continuum in emergence and establishment of strategic patterns.
